| Finish | Appearance | A useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Matte | A flatter, quieter look with less reflection. | Does this particular product support the cleaning this room needs? |
| Eggshell | A slight sheen that is often visible in angled light. | Do I like this finish on the full wall, beside the window? |
| Satin | More visible reflection than matte or eggshell. | Will the extra sheen emphasize surface texture I want repaired? |
A product label tells you more than a sheen name.
Manufacturers offer different coatings within the same sheen family. Ask for the product line as well as the finish when comparing quotes. A durable matte coating and a basic matte coating should not be assumed to perform identically.
Likewise, sheen names can vary between manufacturers. Approve the selected coating on its own terms. If you are comparing two quotes, make sure the wall preparation, paint line, colour and finish are all stated.
Look along the wall, not only straight at it.
A window can throw light across patches and roller texture. More reflective paint can make these details easier to see. Discuss the existing surface and the preparation you expect before deciding on the final finish.
In a busy hallway, start with cleaning requirements. In a bedroom, you may give more weight to a quieter look. Both decisions still need a suitable product and a sound prepared surface.

Walls and trim can use different finishes.
A softer wall finish beside a more reflective door or baseboard can distinguish the surfaces without changing the colour. The trim coating should suit the material and the handling it receives. Do not assume one can is right for the entire room.
Keep the product names and sheen details after the work. Those records help with cleaning instructions and future repainting. A colour name alone is not enough to recreate the appearance of an existing finish.
A few details before you decide
Is satin always more washable than matte?
No blanket rule applies across all products. Read the specific paint’s performance and cleaning guidance, then choose for the room.
Will matte hide all wall defects?
No. A lower sheen can make some surface variation less prominent, but paint does not replace repairs or preparation.
What finish should I use in a hallway?
Discuss traffic, wall condition and the cleaning you expect. Then compare suitable products and choose the sheen you like from that shortlist.
