Start by matching the surfaces.
Before comparing totals, check that each quote covers the same rooms. Then compare walls, ceilings, doors, trim and closets individually. Look for surfaces described as optional or excluded.
For a connected main floor, ask where the work ends. A living-room repaint can meet a hallway, stairwell or open kitchen with no natural stopping point. Agree on that boundary before comparing the price.
Ask these questions of every quote.
- Which rooms and surfaces are included, and which are excluded?
- What preparation and repair work is allowed for?
- Which paint products and finishes are proposed?
- How will the coating requirements be confirmed for the existing surface and colour change?
- Who moves furniture and clears belongings?
- What protection, daily access and cleanup are included?
- What scheduling, payment and change-of-scope terms apply?
- Are travel and applicable taxes accounted for in the total?
Make uncertainty visible.
Some issues are easier to see in person than in a photo. Ask which parts of the estimate depend on assessment and how changes would be discussed. A useful quote should let you distinguish confirmed work from an allowance.
If a wall has an unresolved stain, damaged area or failing finish, point it out before accepting a painting scope. Ask what needs assessment and whether any other work must happen first.
Ask for relevant proof.
Request photographs of work similar to yours and, where available, references or genuine customer reviews. Ask who will carry out the work and how the agreed scope will be documented. Confirm those details directly with the contractor.
