THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose an accent wall with a clear purpose, such as the wall behind a bed or a separate dining area. Test the colour beside the surrounding walls and fixed finishes, then quote its dimensions, condition and paint coverage.

Choose the wall before the colour.

Look for a surface that already makes sense as the focus. A headboard wall has a natural centre. A dining wall can define one part of an open room. A wall broken by several doors may make the colour feel more scattered.

Photograph the room from its entrance and your usual seat. Include the adjoining wall colour and the ceiling. If the proposed wall turns a corner into another room, decide exactly where the new colour will stop.

Deep colour needs a real sample.

Dark green, burgundy and clay can each look quite different in morning light and under warm evening bulbs. Use a large sample in the room and move it beside the sofa, bedding or artwork you are keeping.

Do not select a precise paint colour from a screen alone. A room image is useful for choosing a direction; an actual sample is what lets you judge the paint with your finishes.

Include what is on the wall.

Tell us about shelves, televisions, mirrors, picture hooks and adhesive decorations. Decide what will stay, what will be removed and which holes should be filled. Send a close-up of any texture or damage as well as the wide room view.

A large colour change can need a different coating plan from a similar-colour refresh. The quote should account for the selected product, preparation and coverage, including additional coats if needed. Text the wall’s width and height, your neighbourhood and the colour direction to start.

A few details before you decide

Can an accent wall be the same colour as the trim?

Yes. The products and sheens should still suit their surfaces. Read our guide to matching wall and trim colour before choosing the combination.

Which wall should I paint in a bedroom?

The headboard wall is one option because the bed already gives it a purpose. Check what you see through the doorway and whether windows or doors interrupt the surface.

Can you paint a geometric mural or wallpaper effect?

This page covers painted colour walls. Send your design if you want a decorative finish so the work and availability can be assessed separately.
