THE SHORT ANSWER

A dark-to-light repaint needs a coverage plan for the selected colour and product. Assess the surface, repairs and any stains first, then determine whether a suitable primer and additional coats are needed. Two coats are not a universal coverage promise.

Colour coverage and surface repair are separate jobs.

A dark wall may be sound and smooth, or it may have old patches, peeling paint and marks. Send both wide photos and close-ups. The quote should address the condition as well as the new colour.

Stains, bare repaired areas and adhesion concerns can call for particular primers. Primer selection should follow the surface and coating requirements. Do not assume that a product labelled paint-and-primer solves every preparation problem.

  1. Choose the final colour in the room.

Compare the light shade with your trim and flooring. A small white sample surrounded by a dark wall can be hard to judge, so use a useful sample size and neutral surround.

  2. Review the preparation.

Identify repairs, stains and the current finish. Ask what primer, if any, is proposed and why it suits the surface.

  3. Price the coverage.

The scope should allow for the agreed finish with the selected coating. Confirm how any additional coats are handled before work starts.

A lighter wall can change the balance of the room.

Once the wall becomes light, the trim, sofa and flooring may feel more prominent. Compare the new shade with those items before assuming the brightest white is the best choice.

If several walls meet at an open corner, decide whether to repaint them together. A single changed wall can leave another colour looking different even though that surface has not been touched.

A few details before you decide

Do dark walls always need primer?

Not every repaint has the same requirements. The surface, repairs, stains and chosen finish determine the primer and coating plan. Ask for that plan in the quote.

Will two coats of white cover black paint?

It depends on the product, colour and surface. Do not rely on a blanket two-coat promise for a major colour change.

Can I repaint just the old accent wall?

Yes, if the boundaries are clear. Include adjoining walls and trim in your photos so the new colour can be considered in context.
