THE SHORT ANSWER

Stairwell painting needs an assessment of height, stair shape and working access. It is quoted separately from our standard-height room packages. Send views from both the top and bottom, including landings and the ceiling.

  1. Photograph the full height.

Stand at a safe, normal landing and show the wall up to the ceiling. A close-up alone cannot show the access needed for the upper corners.

  2. Follow the colour upstairs.

Decide whether the repaint stops at the landing or continues into the upstairs hallway. Include the lower entry if it shares the same uninterrupted wall.

  3. Separate woodwork from walls.

Handrails, spindles, stringers, baseboards and doors are distinct surfaces. Specify which stay as they are and which need a finish change.

Let the woodwork set the direction.

White walls can keep attention on timber stairs. A deeper colour can bring the wall forward and make pale trim more prominent. Look at samples from below and above; the light at the top of the stair can differ sharply from the entry.

If a new wall colour makes the old trim look yellow or grey, compare a trim sample before adding it to the job. Painting a handrail involves a product and use schedule appropriate to a frequently touched surface.

A continuous colour is an option when you want fewer contrasting edges.

Plan the household route.

The staircase may be the only way to bedrooms, a basement office or a bathroom. Tell us who needs to use it during the day, whether pets can be kept away and when the household is busiest. Access arrangements should be agreed before work begins.

Share details of any flooring installation or handrail work happening at the same time. New paint can need care after application, so the schedule should account for other trades and normal traffic as well as the painting itself.

A quote should name the walls, ceiling sections, preparation and painted woodwork. Ask for exclusions to be written down. “Stairs included” is too broad if you are expecting rails and treads to be refinished as well.

A few details before you decide

Is a stairwell charged like a normal room?

No. Height, landings and the working setup affect the scope. Our starting room package covers standard 8 ft. walls; tall walls and stairs need a separate quote.

Can you repaint only the upper stairwell?

It may be possible where there is a clear stopping point. Send the full wall so we can discuss how the upper and lower areas connect.

Does stairwell painting include stair treads?

No. Treads and floors are separate surfaces. Tell us what you want changed so the quote does not confuse wall painting with stair refinishing.
