THE SHORT ANSWER

The best sequence depends on the flooring work. Agree demolition, dusty work, wall preparation, floor installation, trim and final paint work with both trades. Set who protects each finished surface and who handles touch-ups before booking dates.

Flooring workSequence to discuss
Removing flooring or sanding existing woodComplete disruptive work before surfaces that must stay clean and finished, then coordinate any remaining paint stages.
Installing prefinished flooringDecide whether walls are painted first or after installation, with protection and final touch-ups assigned.
Replacing or removing baseboardsPlan removal, reinstallation, filling and final trim paint as explicit steps.
Keeping the current floorAgree protection suitable for the floor and the painting work.

A single “which comes first” answer misses the trim.

New flooring can involve taking baseboards off, installing new ones or adding a different transition. That work can affect the wall just above the floor. Decide who reinstalls the trim and whether filling and final painting are included.

If doors need adjustment after the floor changes, account for that before the door finish is completed. A quote that includes wall painting alone should not be assumed to include carpentry or trim installation.

Protection needs to suit the surface beneath it.

Ask the flooring installer when the new surface can accept covering, tape and normal traffic. Share those instructions with the painter. Do the same for freshly painted surfaces before another trade works against them.

Write down who supplies protection and who removes it. Include access routes through finished rooms, not only the room being renovated. The plan should cover the path used to carry materials in and out.

Floor changes can affect doors and trim as well as the walls.
  1. Agree the scope with both trades.

List flooring removal, installation, trim work, wall preparation and painting. Identify dependencies before confirming dates.

  2. Leave a final finish step.

Discuss inspection and any agreed touch-ups after the remaining work. Confirm what is included and what would be additional.

  3. Schedule furniture last.

Allow for the chosen products’ use and cure requirements before heavy furniture or tightly fitted pieces return.

A few details before you decide

Can painters work after new floors are installed?

Yes, with suitable protection and an agreed schedule. Confirm the flooring manufacturer’s and installer’s requirements first.

Should I remove baseboards myself before painting?

Agree this with the people doing the work. Removal can expose areas needing repair and affects who handles reinstallation and finishing.

Does Good Painting’s quote include flooring installation?

No. This is a painting coordination guide. Flooring and carpentry work must be separately arranged and clearly distinguished from the painting scope.
