Finished basement sitting room with high windows and light neutral walls

THE SHORT ANSWER

For a finished-basement repaint, show the windows, walls, bulkheads and stairs as well as the floor area. Confirm the surfaces are dry and any moisture problem has been resolved before considering paint.

Start with how you use the space.

A downstairs office needs a different colour decision from a movie room. Think about the room at the time you use it. If the lights are on most of the day, compare paint samples under those bulbs instead of relying on a bright upstairs room.

Bring photos of the window walls and the corners furthest from them. A lighter colour can reflect the light available, but paint cannot add daylight. You may prefer a deeper, deliberate colour in a television area and a quieter neutral beside a desk.

Separate walls, ceilings and everything overhead.

A finished basement may have a flat drywall ceiling, bulkheads or a suspended ceiling. Send a photo of each type. A walls-only repaint does not include ceiling tiles, exposed services or utility equipment.

List the finished rooms and the staircase separately. Mechanical and storage areas can stay outside the scope if that is what you want. For a newly finished basement, say whether the drywall is bare, primed or already painted; each is a different starting point.

Leave room to work and allow the chosen coating to dry as directed.

Four photos that make a basement quote easier.

  1. A wide view from the bottom of the stairs showing the entry route.
  2. The full window wall, with the lights on.
  3. The ceiling and any bulkheads or tall areas.
  4. Close views of repairs, stains or damaged paint, followed by a wider view showing where they are.

Add your approximate floor area and whether furniture can move to another room. Mention any home office, exercise equipment or sleeping area that needs to remain accessible while work is underway.

A few details before you decide

Do you paint unfinished basement concrete?

This page covers finished interior rooms. Concrete, masonry and specialty coatings need a separate assessment; include photos and ask about the specific surface.

Will white make my basement brighter?

White reflects available light, but the lighting still matters. Test a sample in the darkest area and under your usual bulbs. An off-white with the right undertone may suit the room better than a stark white.

Is basement painting included in a whole-home package?

Only if it is explicitly included in the quoted floor area and surfaces. List the basement when you request your whole-home quote.
