Why a white can look grey at home.
Benjamin Moore describes north-facing light as cooler and more muted. A white with a cool undertone may therefore look quite different from its store sample. The amount of light also matters: a shaded room and a large-windowed room can face the same direction and still feel different.
Choose a small group of whites with a reason for each. Try a warm option, a more balanced option and a shade close to the existing trim. Comparing them side by side is more useful than collecting ten nearly identical colour cards.
Put the sample beside the fixed finishes.
The floor, stone, cabinets and trim are staying in the room with the paint. Move the sample beside each before making a choice.
Check the darker wall too.
The wall opposite a window can receive different light from the wall beside it. Use a movable board or suitable sample method to compare both.
Look again in the evening.
Turn on the lamps and overhead lights you use normally. A white approved only in daylight may not suit the room at bedtime.
Warmer does not have to mean cream.
There are small steps between a stark white and a visibly creamy shade. If a sample feels too yellow beside your trim, try a less warm option and compare again. Avoid choosing from the colour name alone.
Keep the sample away from a strongly coloured old wall where possible, or compare it against a neutral surround. The existing wall colour can make a small sample harder to judge. Approve the chosen product and sheen as part of the final decision.

A few details before you decide
Should I avoid every cool white in a north-facing room?
No. A cool white may suit the materials and the effect you want. The point is to test it in the actual light rather than assume it will look neutral.
Will the same white work upstairs and downstairs?
Check it in both places. Window size, nearby trees, flooring and bulbs can change its appearance.
Can Good Painting quote the room before I choose the white?
Send the room dimensions, current colour and condition to begin. The final product, colour change and coverage requirements should be settled in the agreed scope.
