BEFORE YOU PAINT

A fresh finish in a home with history.

Start by identifying the surfaces and details you want to keep. The age of a neighbourhood cannot tell you what is behind every coat.

Take stock of the existing finish.

Older Calgary homes can include several generations of paint, repairs and renovations. A room may have a mix of original details and newer surfaces. Share what you know about past work and identify anything you want preserved.

For a painting enquiry, photograph broad wall areas and the junctions between walls, ceilings and trim. Include visible patch edges or changes in texture. The aim is to make the assessment more useful, not to diagnose the surface yourself.

Separate preservation from repainting.

List stained wood, original doors, built-ins and decorative details that should stay untouched. If you are considering a change to one of them, raise that as its own question. Painting walls beside an existing finish is a different scope from changing that finish.

Ask how the proposed work accounts for the current condition. Restoration, structural repairs and specialist treatment should not be assumed to be included in an interior painting quote.

Do not remove unknown finishes to prepare for a quote.

If coatings or textured materials are of uncertain age or composition, tell the contractor before any preparation is agreed. Ask what assessment is needed. Arrange any required hazardous-material testing or removal with a qualified specialist before painting begins.

Plan the result in the light you live with.

Look at the wall in daylight and with your evening lighting. Note the areas you want discussed, including old repair lines or uneven texture. A colour choice and a surface-correction scope answer different questions, so give both attention.

Our Mount Royal and Elbow Park pages cover planning for homes in those communities. Each property still needs its own assessment.

Keep the details you like.
